10 Fantastic Tips to Relieve Sore Throat Pain

Most cold symptoms are more of a bother than a serious cause of pain. A sore throat is often the exception to this idea. Sore throats not only cause discomfort but often hurt as well. Since viruses are the root of most colds, people often have to let their cold run its course. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to lessen the pain of a sore throat while you are feeling sick. Check out the tips below to soothe your symptoms and get back to daily life. 

  1. Stay hydrated. Your body needs fluids to heal and fight off infections. Colds often lead to dehydration so it is important to be especially aware of your water intake during this time.
  2. Don’t smoke or drink. Smoke and alcohol are irritants for an already aggravated throat. Avoid these until your cold is gone and you are feeling better.
  3. Use a throat lozenge. A lozenge, such as Sucrets®, will help to numb your throat while also coating your throat with a protective barrier. This barrier guards your throat from even more irritation and pain.
  4. Limit talking. This may sound severe but talking can further stress your throat and, in some cases, may lead to laryngitis. It is better to be safe than sorry and let your throat rest while it is infected.
  5. Try Licorice root. Mix licorice syrup or powder with a glass of water and relief will be on the way. Licorice root induces phlegm and helps to eliminate irritating coughs.
  6. Consider a mild pain reliever. A product such as Ibuprofen may help throat pain that doesn’t subside.
  7. Be sure to get your Vitamin C. Take Vitamin C tablets or eat foods high in Vitamin C (such as broccoli, kale, or cauliflower). Vitamin C boosts the body’s immune system and allows it to effectively fight against viruses and infections.
  8. Check out Echinacea. Echinacea comes in multiple forms and is widely available at most pharmacies. Echinacea helps to relieve many common cold symptoms, including sore throat. In addition, it is thought to shorten the length of most colds.
  9. Embrace humidity.  A humidifier helps add moisture to the air and can soothe a sore and scratchy throat. If you don’t have a humidifier, a hot steam shower can do the trick. Be sure to concentrate on breathing in the steam and moisture.
  10. Visit the doctor. If you find your cold or sore throat is persistent, it may be necessary to go and check in with the doctor. The doctor can check to make sure your sore throat isn’t caused by a bacterial infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics.
